Dexter is an American television series on the Showtime premium cable channel in the United States. The series is based on characters created by Jeff Lindsay for his "Dexter" series of novels. It first aired on October 1, 2006. The series follows the life of protagonist Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a Miami Metro Police Department blood pattern analyst with a double life. Although the investigation of murder in the homicide division, Dexter hunts and kills the murderers and criminals who have escaped justice. Although the first season is based on the events of the dark Dreaming Dexter, the following seasons of the series does not follow the novels of the series. From the narrative of the second novel Dear devotees Lindsay Dexter Dexter, the series writer Daniel Cerone, said writers "did not see the opportunity in the second book" to adjust.
The series has received generally favorable reviews from critics. The pilot episode, which aired on October 1, 2006, attracted more than a million viewers, its ratings on Showtime series over almost two years. Encouraged by critical acclaim and high ratings, CBS began broadcasting Dexter free-to-air on February 17, 2008, making Dexter the program for the first time in two decades on the air in a national broadcast network after have been shown in a premium cable channel. Five stations comprising twelve episodes each have been issued in the United States, and the sixth season has been confirmed for broadcast. The first four seasons have been released on DVD and Blu-ray, in Regions 1, 2 and 3, respectively, in a region. (Except for the third season in region 2) Systems of the box containing the first three seasons were released on August 18, 2009, on DVD and Blu-ray.
